Hypericum perforatum

This sunny little flower has been used as both an internal and external herbal remedy since the time of ancient Greece. It is widely distributed and most commonly known in modern culture as gentle support for depression. It is also known to be an effective nervine, which means it can address nervous system weaknesses and provide support to overworked nerves.

At Kuumba Made, we celebrate this plant primarily for the success it has topically in supporting a variety of skin conditions as well as nerve pain. Every year in July, we work with sustainable wildcrafters in Oregon to harvest and ship beautiful fresh tops of the plant branches while it is in flower. It is a very exciting couple of days at our headquarters; the entire team pauses what we’re doing and together we admire and lay the flowers out to gently wilt to just the right point before we process it into small pieces and infuse it into organic extra virgin olive oil. Almost immediately, this precious oil begins to turn red from the hypericin and pigmented flavonoids. We include this infusion into our formulas whenever we want to soothe overworked muscles and joints.
